Color masterbatch is a widely used material in the plastic industry and plays a crucial role in the production of plastic products. Let's learn about this material with CPI Plastic in the article below.

What is Color Masterbatch?

Color masterbatch is one of the three types of Masterbatch used in plastic production. It is a concentrated plastic material primarily composed of high-grade pigments and a base resin. Additionally, it may contain dispersing agents and other additives depending on specific requirements.

Color masterbatch is used to impart color to plastic products, and can also enhance certain other properties of the product.

Color masterbatch is a pre-compounded material that can be used directly in production, typically at a ratio of 1-10%. Color masterbatches are usually produced from PE and PP resins, offering high compatibility with various types of plastics. For custom color formulations, the masterbatch can be made from the same type of resin used to produce the final product.

Benefits

Color masterbatch is created to provide diverse colors for plastic products, making them more visually appealing, enhancing product competitiveness, and offering customers more color choices. Color masterbatches are typically free from additives and harmful toxic substances, making them safe for users.

In addition to benefits for users, color masterbatch also brings numerous advantages in production, such as:

  • High color dispersion – easily and completely disperses during production, resulting in more uniform colored plastic products compared to other coloring methods.
  • Accurate color matching – achieves precise colors according to sample products or customer requirements.
  • High colorfastness – helps products withstand the effects of weather and light, ensuring long-lasting color.
  • Optimized production process – can be used directly in production at the manufacturer's recommended ratio without the need for blending various pigments, saving time, labor, and reducing production costs.

Distinguishing between color masterbatch and colored plastic

Although they have similar main components, color masterbatch contains 20-75% coloring agent, while colored plastic contains only a very small amount of coloring agent.

Colored plastic is primarily plastic pellets recycled from used plastic products. The characteristic of this type of plastic is that it can be used as the sole raw material to produce plastic products in various colors, at a low cost. However, as recycled plastic, it contains many impurities. Furthermore, because it is already colored, it is very difficult to change the color as desired.

Applications

Color masterbatch can serve all production needs, providing color for plastic products such as:

  • Injection molding: suitable for PP, PE, ABS, PC plastics.
  • Blown film: suitable for LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP plastics.
  • Compression molding: suitable for PP, HDPE plastics.
  • Woven bags: suitable for PP, HDPE plastics.
